The urban basket maker worked from a permanent workshop. In the rural areas it was often seasonal work, sometimes itinerant, and was organized in two seasons: winter and summer. The raw material was chestnut, oak, birch or cherry. Woven wicker baskets, and even of rye straw were also very common.
The basket makers also had a trade jargon or "Latin" that is still retained in Mondariz and has many features in common with that of the stonemasons.
