The Blade sharpeners are the classic representatives of the itinerant trader and are particularly characteristic of the province of Ourense. Their work took them far away from their homeland and perhaps for that reason, and to strengthen their sense of community, they created the “barallete”, a peculiar trade jargon similar to that developed by masons, tile makers and basket weavers..
The wheel and a few tools comprised their working environment, which dealt with sharpening knives, scissors and sickles, but this role was often combined with that of umbrella repairs, lumbermen and tinkers.
