EBroadly speaking, architecture can be considered as any intervention on the terrain to adapt it to the conditions of human life, from road networks, the ploughing of farmland to the actual construction of a building .
Local stone is the basic material and the various constructive solutions conform with the changing characteristics of the surroundings. The house on the coast ranges from the humble dwellings of fishing villages to the solid buildings and structures of the ports, displaying fine stonework, often with porches. The houses of the interior range from those in mountainous areas adapted to extreme weather conditions, to that of agricultural districts, more spacious and comfortable.
Adjoining the houses are other ancillary buildings with specific characteristics to suit their role: grain stores and porches to store produce and equipment; stables, dovecotes and hives for animals; for the manufacture and processing of produce there were threshing floors, mills, ovens, wineries and craft workshops sometimes with temporary or permanent displays offering the sale or exchange of products, and lastly systems of natural resource use such as fountains, wells and laundry washing places.
